Turned the scale and has lost 23kg so far…

My weight loss journey began not long after the birth of my son – when I started to pay more attention to my health.

I am immensely proud of everything my body did in conceiving and bringing him safely into the world, however I knew I was carrying excess weight before and after the pregnancy, and I needed to educate myself on better eating practices going forward. I also suffer from PCOS and endometriosis, and after being hospitalised several times, I hoped reducing my weight could positively impact these conditions.

My starting weight was 103kgs. I did not feel my range of movement was ideal, I resisted exercise and excessive movement, I was often lethargic and depressed, and I had begun to feel less than enthused about getting dressed in the morning. I had never attempted to lose weight before as I felt the lack of progress I observed “going it alone” had a detrimental effect on my motivation and commitment, and I would often return to my emotional eating patterns as a result, feeling like a failure and that I was set to be the weight I was forever.

Discussing these mental roadblocks helped me to form not only a plan of attack for consistently and safely losing weight over time with diet and exercise, keeping in mind I was still breastfeeding, but also a pathway to overcoming the psychological challenges I had faced with my weight management. This has helped me on the journey to losing 23 kilograms (so far) and achieving success.

Managing my weight will be a lifelong endeavour but I feel empowered to make good decisions, and self-correct when I unconsciously revert to my “old” ways.  If I could pass on encouragement to people considering taking a similar step it would be – you deserve happiness with the body you own, and you will surprise yourself with what you are able to achieve with a little help.

“I knew I had the tools and resources to get back to where I wanted to be. And just like other medical support, these were available to me for the long term which is when I most need them”.

I started 10kg heavier than where I had always felt comfortable at 82 kgs.

I had lost a significant amount of weight a few years ago but somehow it was starting to creep back up again and I knew once I hit over the 80kg mark that I needed to do something. I could feel I was getting back to a place I didn’t want to be and suddenly all the new clothes I had replaced old ones with from the previous weight loss were no longer fitting. And I knew how great I felt when my body was at a comfortable weight.

Frustrated with this ongoing battle and now into my early fifties when I knew menopause weight was going to be an even bigger issue if I didn’t get things under control now. I knew I needed some real help to find a way to not only lose the weight again but to keep it off for good.

I needed to understand the reasons for the weight gain and learn the tools and resources to get back to where I wanted to be. And just like other medical support, I needed to know that these tools were available to me for the long term which is when I most need them.

Nothing is easy when you make a significant change and the first few days were challenging as my body adjusted to the change in eating habits. However, the weight quickly started to come off and it was just what I needed to feel confident and happy again. I was back in control of my body, but this time with the knowledge that I was not going to have the struggles to keep it off like I used to.

I reached my goal weight within 3 months and have stayed within a 3kg range for over 15 months which is the longest I have managed to maintain. I have regular check ups regarding my weight and health, as I am one of those people that need support to make sure I stay on track. Unfortunately, I am fighting my gene pool on this one and have had to accept that it will never be easy for me but I have also learnt that it can be done, and it is ok to ask for help.

Making the decision to do something positive towards keeping my weight under control has been very rewarding and I am so glad I didn’t delay the decision to seek help any longer.

Made small steps and has now lost 36kg so far…

In April 2017, I had just had my 30th birthday party and when the full body photos were shown to me I was horrified at how big I was.

In April 2017, I had just had my 30th birthday party and when the full body photos were shown to me I was horrified at how big I was.

Internally I never realised how big I actually had got. I played netball, I exercised but I ate way too much.

At the beginning, I weighed 135kg. I was consistently waking during the night and in the morning with terrible hip pain.

After having 3 children, I put all my time and energy into raising my young family and owning my own hairdressing salon I had put my own needs to the side and forgotten to look after myself.

I finally said “enough is enough.” and I started my weight loss journey by myself. I stuck to this for 8-10 months and I lost 17kg. However, my old lifestyle was starting to creep back in and I had put 6kg back on. I decided it was my time to reach out for help, I couldn’t do it on my own anymore.

In August 2018 I weighed 124kg. As an overweight person all my whole life I have often felt that some people in the medical industry can make you feel bad about yourself and be quite rude when talking about your weight. But this was now not the case. I found a place that I would not be judged. Through my weight loss journey, I have learnt so much about food. In particular how I can fuel my body, good carbohydrates, bad carbohydrates, good fats, bad fats and protein. I also learnt about how much I should have of different foods, as one of my main issues was not what I ate but how much I ate.

It has not always been an easy journey, I have had lots of good days and a few bad days. Although, if I eat something wrong I just try to get back on track ASAP rather than letting it defeat me.

I have been on this program for 8 months and I have lost an amazing 25kg totalling to 36kg, – that is almost the equivalent of my 7yr old son.

At the beginning of this process I set myself 5kg mini goals but my main goals was to get under 100kg. I have just recently achieved my main goal, I can’t remember the last time I was under 100kg. This was a HUGE achievement for myself.

One of my family goals with my weight loss journey was to take my family to Queensland and go to the theme parks. My biggest fear was trying to take one of my kids on a ride and being escorted off the ride as I was too overweight to ride with my children. Now, instead of being scared to go, I’m super excited to take my kids to the theme parks, which was something I loved doing as a kid.

This journey has not only helped me but it has also aided my husband to lose 25kg and my children are eating really healthily and learning to have a good relationship with food. I love that I’m still eating dinner with them every night, maybe a small variation to my meal but basically we eat the same food. This was something very important to me as I believe sitting with your family around the dinner table and eating together is a very important moment and I’m so glad I can do that on this diet.

I know that it won’t be easy but I feel like I am able to keep my weight off long term now and enjoy the healthier me!

Turned it around and has lost 15kg so far…

“Since starting this journey, I have lost 15kg, I feel healthier inside, I have more energy, and feel better about me”.

I started at 99.8kg. I had no energy, I didn’t like who I was or what I felt like, I was frustrated that I couldn’t lose weight, I didn’t know who or what to believe any more about what was healthy and what was not.

There was so much contradictory information. I decided that if I was going to lose any weight I would need help. I lost 5kg in the first 2 weeks that was enough for me to start feeling better inside, have more energy and be happier that something was working.

Where am I now? I am still on the journey to my goal weight. There have been challenges along the way, times of stress and tiredness, Christmas/social gatherings which have caused me to not to deviate from my healthy eating plan, but I have also learnt not to beat myself up about that. Just accept it and move forward towards the goal.

Since starting this journey, I have lost 15kg, I feel healthier inside, I have more energy, and feel better about me. I have learnt about what different foods do to your body, how to eat healthy and maintain my weight once I get to my goal.

There has been no judgement or criticism or anything negative, only the support and encouragement I need to reach my goals.

“I learnt a lot about nutrition and noticed that my relationship with food began to change”.

I have always struggled with my weight. I used to weigh 110kgs. My relationship with food revolved around enjoyment and very little self-restraint.

As a result, most of my life has been spent overweight. I have tried to lose weight several times, with varying degrees of success. What I have found is that my old habits are too easy to slip back into and inevitably the weight comes back.

I guess I’m at an age now where my body is struggling to keep up with my eating habits which I would call impulsive and concerned more with enjoyment than nutrition (I love sweet food as well as crunchy snacks…alcohol features pretty highly too!).

My family history is riddled with diabetes on all sides and I, myself, was on the verge of pre-diabetes. As well as other health issues knocking on my door, I decided it was time to do something about it. We don’t know when our time is up but I am resolved to do the best I can to make sure that I’m around as long as I can be for my family and friends.

With all that said, I decided to do something about my weight. I learnt a lot about nutrition and noticed that my relationship with food began to change. Simple changes to the choices I was making around the types of food I was eating began to reap rewards and the weight began to fall off. The weight-loss phase was something I really enjoyed. I did the meal replacement program and found them really convenient, given my busy work life and stepping on the scales every day to see how much I had lost was my daily reward.

Even though I was doing a bit of exercise, I was amazed at how little exercise I could do and still see good results on the scales. I didn’t really struggle with will power and despite being faced with situations where food preparation was out of my control, I would always choose the low carb option, where I could.

Maintenance has been more of a struggle because keeping up momentum can be really difficult and, as I said before, old habits can creep back very quickly. I received help to deal with cravings and long term weight maintenance. I got down to 84kgs and lost 26 kgs in the space of 12 weeks and have kept it off for 12 months with the occasional fluctuation but am now confident that I can beat the long term battle with weight.

Meredith

Made life changes and has lost 34kg so far…

I have been over weight for as long as I can remember. I had tried a few different things in the past to try to lose weight - cleanses, quick fixes and yo-yo diets. I would have a small amount of success, but then eventually fall back to the same old habits.

I hadn’t realised that certain medications I had been taking had contributed to my weight gain, and in September 2018 when I was sitting in my doctor’s office, I was in tears because my of my increasing weight. I hated seeing myself in the mirror. I hated me.

I decided it was time to seek help. After all of the yo-yo diets - losses and then weight regain, I was sure that the only way I would be able to lose weight was surgery. But here I am, 12 months later, 34Kg down. And it’s not JUST weight loss. It is education about how to maintain the weight, it’s about nutrition, how important it is that we put good foods in our bodies, and make good choices.

So, I know now that I have made it to my goal weight, I have all of the tools that I need to maintain my weight, to make good nutritious choices.

I used to look away when approaching a mirror. Now I stop. Firstly in disbelief that it is me, and then a second to admire.
